MOT Reception

Your Vehicle and the MOT Test

Any car registered for use on the road in the EC must pass some kind of mechanical and emissions test - known in the UK as the 'MOT', after the old Ministry of Transport. In the UK cars must be Tested at the end of their third year (if imported, measured from date of manufacture), and yearly after that.

If you have a car that is more than 3 years old it will need an MOT test each year to ensure that it meets at least the minimum road safety and environmental standards.

The MOT Test JD Motors Vehicle Testing Stations at Alton and Rushmoor will accept Goods Vehicles [over 3,000kg up to 3,500kg DGW], Light Commercial Vehicles, Cars, Motor Caravans, Ambulances and Taxis whether they have diesel or petrol engines.

Your MOT certificate confirms that at the time of the test your vehicle met, as far as can be reasonably determined without dismantling, the minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standards required by law. It does not mean that the vehicle is roadworthy for the life of the certificate and is not a substitute for regular maintenance.

MOT Certificates have changed

The way information is held about MOT tests has changed. Records of test results are now held on a secure central database. This change has not affected your actual MOT test but it has affected the way you check the MOT history. All MOT testing stations have been connected to this central database. When your vehicle is tested at one of these 'computerised' testing stations your test record will be entered onto this new database and you will receive a new style [A4 in size] certificate.

About the new certificate

The new MOT certificate is your receipt for the MOT test. It shows the information that is held on the MOT database. The certificate is no longer proof of an MOT and should not be relied on as such. Only the computer record can prove a vehicle has a valid MOT. Under the new system any recommended advisory work will normally be shown on a new Advisory Notice which will be given to you at the time of the test.

Replacing lost or damaged certificates

If you have lost or damaged your MOT Test Certificate, you can obtain a duplicate from any MOT Testing Station by providing: the Vehicle Registration Mark; and either the original MOT Test Number or Document Reference Number [shown on the V5C Registration Certificate issued by the DVLA].

Checking the authenticity of an MOT certificate

If you have reason to believe the certificate you have been issued is not genuine please contact the MOT status check service on 0870 330 0444 [national rate].

Booking in your Vehicle for an MOT

You can book your vehicle in for a MOT test at either our Alton or Rushmoor premises by calling 01420 544644 during garage opening hours or using our online form at any time.

Have JD Motors carry out a MOT for you If you have you discovered that your MOT has run out, not by a few days but by several months, then urgent action is needed since it is illegal to drive a vehicle on public roads without a current certificate. Fortunately JD Motors can come to the rescue by slotting your vehicle into our workshops, sometimes the same day or generally within a day or so, but do pre-book for an MOT test using this online form.

As the MOT test takes approximately one hour you may wish to discuss future servicing requirements at our Reception Counter or wait in our comfortable waiting room where hot drinks are available and magazines to read. You cannot re-licence older vehicles for use on public roads without a valid MOT certificate and it is frustrating that no official notice is received warning about an impending expiry date. However if JD Motors has previously tested your vehicle, we will try to notify you by email as the anniversary date approaches.

You can also sign up for our MOT Reminder Service if you are considering JD Motors for your next test.

With your Registration Certificate available, a status check showing details about the vehicle at the time of the last test, the time and place the test was conducted and if the vehicle passed together with the date of expiry. Just visit the MOT Status Check Request page.
