VEHICLE TECHNICIAN
Today's vehicles are so technologically advanced that there is more computer kit in a modern car than there was on the Apollo II spacecraft!
With around 33½ million licensed vehicles on the road, the requirement for highly skilled technicians to repair, maintain and keep them
roadworthy will always be present.
Working with JD Motors, you will repair a wide variety of modern motor cars and small commercial vehicles in
clean, well equipped, workshops in a friendly environment. You should have experience of fault finding using diagnostic machinery and be able to solve
problems in a logical sequence.
Your main tasks will include:
- find and identify mechanical faults, often using electronic testing equipment
- advise the owner on the required repairs
- Using test instruments for verifying whether components function correctly
- provide a time and cost estimate for the repairs
- carry out the necessary work, which could include replacing defective parts
- carry out routine servicing and checks
Hours and Environment
As a motor vehicle technician you would work 40 hours a week, between Monday and Friday. You might have opportunities to work shifts,
including weekends.
Working conditions are clean and spacious. Some tasks can be physically demanding, although you will use lifting equipment and hoists to move heavy parts.
You would use a range of hand and power tools, and electrical testing equipment; this can include computerised fault-finding equipment which connects to
the vehicle's electronic control unit [ECU] to identify problems.
If you deal with breakdowns, you may have to travel long distances and work in all weather conditions. |
Skills and Interests
You need:
- an excellent knowledge of motor vehicle technology
- an aptitude for practical work
- good problem-solving skills to find faults
- the ability to work quickly and pay attention to detail
- the ability to work without supervision
- good communication skills
- the ability to follow written instructions
- a reasonable level of fitness, with normal colour vision
- an up-to-date knowledge of car developments, especially new engine types and electronics
- an awareness of health and safety regulations
